St Moritz - Sophistication and Style
Renowned globally as the epitome of mountain luxury, St Moritz has moved on from the rather formal grandeur it exuded for over a century. While the traditional bastions of the rather somber and prim, old-school Alpine etiquette still attract the well-heeled European aristocracy, a new style of super-luxury hotel has sprung up or even evolved out of the older institutions.
Motivated not least by the influx of Russian money landing itself on the town’s airstrip, hotels like the 5-star Kempinski are the new template for St Moritz’s re-formed character. Luxury and high quality remains guaranteed, but nowadays the atmosphere is more relaxed and convivial. This change has turned St Moritz into a perfect place to entertain clients, hold executive meetings, organise conferences and even launch new products.
Sometimes eclipsed by such things as the Horse Polo on the lake and the Cresta Run tobogganing, in fact the skiing around St Moritz is exceptionally good. A great mix of terrain from tree-skiing to high alpine glaciers and a reliable snow record make for a fantastic domain. Combine this with the fact that many of the denizens of the resort forget to leave the luxury shops and restaurants in town and you are left with often empty slopes to enjoy to the full.
Transfer times are 3hrs from Zurich and Milan or 4 hrs from Munich. Of course, the way to really impress staff or clients is to make the transfer time about 7minutes by flying directly into the Sty Moritz landing strip on the edge of town.
